An epidemiological study on temporomandibular disorders in young adult females


Abstract
This study was conducted to give an aid in diagnois, treatment and prevention of TMD by finding out the correlation between prevalence of TMD and subjective and objective symptoms and various related factor.
The subjects consisted of 110 nurses and the informations were collected from clinical examination and questionare.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. 72.7% of the sample had symptoms of temporomandibular disorders and 17.3% had subjective symptoms.
2. Symptoms of TMD were observed at higher frequency in the group with headache.
3. Limitation of mouth opening and headache were observed at higher frequency in the group with bruxism and the higher the frequency of appearence of symptoms of TMD.
4. The higher the degree of malocclusion and the tendancy of unilateral chewing, the higher the frequency of appearence of symptoms of TMD.
5. The higher the degree of pain on palpation of TMJ and masticator muscles, especially of masseter muscle, the higher the frequency of appearence of TMD symptoms.
6. TMJ noise were observed in 43.6% of all the subjects and 73.7% of the group with subjective symptoms and the frequency o bilateral joint noise was highest in the group with subjective symptoms. As observed form this data, TMJ noise seems to be
an
important subjective symptom of TMD.
